A folyamatos befejezett múlt (past perfect continuous) a folyamatos befejezett jelennek (present perfect continuous) felel meg, de egy olyan időre utal, amelyik korábban történt, mint a 'jelen előtti pillanat'. A folyamatos befejezett múlt esetén jobban érdekel bennünket a folyamat.

- We had been trying to open the door for five minutes when Jane found her key.
- It had been raining hard for several hours and the streets were very wet.
- Her friends had been thinking of calling the police when she walked in.
Ezt a formát használjuk a függő beszédben is. A folyamatos múlt (past continuous) és a folyamatos befejezett jelen (present perfect continuous) megfelelője a direkt beszédben:
- Jane said, "I have been gardening all afternoon." = Jane said she had been gardening all afternoon.
- When the police questioned him, John said, "I was working late in the office that night." = When the police questioned him, John told them he had been working late in the office that night.
A folyamatos befejezett múlt formálása
A folyamatos befejezett múlt két részből áll: a to be ige befejezett múlt formája (had been) + a fő ige folyamatos melléknévi igenév fomája (present participle), (tő + ing).
